Hailed by many as one of the most desirable places in Atlanta to live and work, the district known as Buckhead consists of multiple affluent residential neighborhoods, commercial centers, high-rise buildings, plenty of wooded space and some of the best shopping and dining options available in the Southeast—all located within minutes of downtown Atlanta. Combining urban convenience with suburban charm (not to mention some of the best schools in the state), it stands to reason why Buckhead remains one of the metro’s most popular destinations.
Buckhead’s origins as part of Atlanta date back to the 1830s when Henry Irby established a general store and tavern on what is now Peachtree Road. The new settlement came to be called Irbyville, named after the store, but it’s rumored that the nickname “Buckhead” came from the head of a deer Irby mounted in the tavern. Over the years, this area became popular as a summer destination for wealthy Atlantans, and despite attempts to change the name officially to Atlanta Heights, the Buckhead name stuck. These days, Buckhead is one of Atlanta’s busiest business districts, but its upscale vibe remains from the early days, and many of the old historic homes can be found in the winding wooded neighborhoods throughout Buckhead.
Buckhead lies within the Atlanta Public School District, and is served by six different elementary schools, along with Sutton Middle School and North Atlanta High School. There are also numerous highly rated private schools in the area, which include The Westminster Schools, Pace Academy and Atlanta International School, among others.
For outdoor enthusiasts, green space is abundant in Buckhead, from golf courses to numerous parks scattered around the area. However, Buckhead is particularly known throughout the region for its array of eclectic shopping and dining options, which remain loosely clustered along the main roads of Peachtree, Piedmont, Roswell and Paces’ Ferry, none of which are far removed from the site of Irby’s original general store. A short drive south and west brings you to the numerous attractions of downtown and Midtown Atlanta.
